Kosmos / Cosmos

Leidsin huvitava orbitaalse viimsepäeva teooria - asja nimeks Kessleri sündroom. Lühidalt jama selles, et kosmoses tiirleb juba liiga palju prügi, mis ohustab satelliite, rakette, kosmosejaamasid jm. ...

The worst part about this, though, is that we are now one step closer to seeing the Kessler Syndrome start to manifest itself. The Kessler Syndrome is basically an orbital doomsday scenario that cuts off mankind’s access to space for thousands of years. The way it works is, some random collision occurs, creating many bits of space debris in orbit. These debris, in turn, end up hitting other things, shredding them, creating even more debris, in a Domino-like fashion. Eventually, everything in orbit is utterly destroyed, and the space around Earth is so polluted with space junk that it is impossible to even launch anything anymore, as it would be destroyed by random impacts almost immediately upon exiting the atmosphere. The scary thing is, the Kessler syndrome is already possible with the current amount of hardware we have in space. Luckily, almost all of it is up there in large controlled chunks, but all it could take is one apocalyptic collision to set a terrible chain of events into motion. This is why China’s test is so mind-numbingly stupid. Because once the Kessler Syndrome takes effect, the only solution with current technology is to wait it out, letting the space debris hit each other, lose momentum, and gradually burn up in the atmosphere. The process takes thousands of years before low orbit is safe to traverse again.

Wired vahendusel jutt prügiprobleemist. Esimese lahendusena pakutakse välja aerogelist filtreid.

Outer space is becoming a garbage heap. Some 15,000 pieces of debris, ranging from fingernail-sized paint flecks to 10-ton rocket stages, are hurtling through Earth's orbit at 5 miles per second — about 10 times as fast as a speeding bullet. And the junk is multiplying, Asteroids-like, as large objects break apart into smaller ones. (China's recent anti-satellite test has hastened the process.) Scientists warn of an approaching Kessler syndrome: the point at which flotsam from collisions makes future space ventures dangerous. How can we clean up the mess? The trick is to either grab shrapnel or coax it toward the planet, where it will burn up in the atmosphere. Several methods of trash collection have been floated. Some are cleverly low tech; others seem like fodder for the Sci Fi Channel.

6 Ways to Clean Up Space

1. Aerogel
NASA already uses this superlight, polystyrene-like material to capture space dust for study. So, some scientists suggest, why not send massive, multipaned panels of aerogel into orbit to accumulate smaller pieces of space waste like bugs on a windshield? Once saturated with crap, the swaths of goo could be rocketed into the atmosphere.

Galactic suite kosmoseturism

Taavi @ 05.11.2009 14:23 | Registreerunud: 01.04.2003

the world's first space resort by galactic suite ltd., is set to open to tourists in 2012.
funded by 3billion dollars from an anonymous billionaire space enthusiast, the resort will be
a bio-inspired orbital station. it has been designed to be a modular space habitat structure
with a central-enclosed area where modules will be interconnected to a main docking port.
each of the modules will include a sliding diaphragm window to allow tourists a better view
of the earth.

the spaceship which will transport resort goers via a space tourism spacecraft which will be
designed to carry at least four passengers and two pilot-astronauts into orbit at an altitude
of 400 km
, powered by a double hybrid rocket engine.

the journey begins at a spaceport facility located on a tropical island, where you will be able
to relax but also participate in an eight-week astronaut training course. after this is completed,
you will be launched into space on the spaceship to the space resort. on board, you will orbit
the earth at an average speed of 30, 000 km / h, completing 15 orbital rotations per day.
at this speed you will be carried around the world in 90 minutes. every 45 minutes you will be
watching the sunrise and sunset exploring a whole new world of sensory-perceptual experiences
in weightlessness
.

to embark on this three-night stay in the space resort and eight-week training course on the
tropical island, this 'out of world experience' will cost you 3 million euros.

Mars 500 e. On Marsilgi kord õites õunapuud

Taavi @ 13.01.2010 13:59 | Registreerunud: 01.04.2003

Mars500 testib inimvõimete piire. Põhiliseks Marsi ekspeditisooni probleemiks on reisi kestvus ca 520 päeva (u 17 kuud).

Mars-500 is a multi-part ground-based experiment simulating manned flight to Mars, which began in the fourth quarter of 2008 at the Institute of Biomedical Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences.[1]

Six volunteers were selected internationally. A total of 640 experiment days have been scheduled, in three stages, the longest of which is to last 520 days. During each stage, the investigator-volunteers live and work in the special complex, communicating with the outside world only by means of e-mail.

The third, longest stage of the experiment, intended to simulate a complete 520-day mission to Mars, is slated to begin in early 2010.[3]

Robonaut R2

Novembris peaks ISS pardale minema esimene robonaut.

Robonaut is a humanoid robotic development project run from the Dextrous Robotics Laboratory at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The core idea behind the Robonaut series of robots is to have a humanoid machine to work along-side astronauts. Its form factor and dexterity are designed such that Robonaut can use space tools and work in similar environments to suited astronauts. Robonaut is a different class of robot than other current space faring robots. While most current space robotic systems focus on moving large objects, similar to a crane, or rovers for exploration, Robonaut's focus is on tasks which require more dexterity.
